CAPPADOCIA (NEVŞEHİR)

In addition, however, this region surprises with a variety of landscapes that leave unforgettable impressions, be it the eroded valleys in the Phrygian mountains, the rocky cones of Cappadocia, also known as fairy chimneys, the green peaks of the Köroglu Daglari or the colorful karst slopes on the Sakarya Nehri. The heart of Central Anatolia is Cappacodia. A fairytale landscape of eroded tuff rock.

In the high mountain steppe near Goreme, strange, cone-shaped rock formations rise in a ghostly landscape. The rock formations were created by now-extinct volcanoes, whose lava flows covered large parts of the highlands. In addition to lava, the volcanoes also spewed out ash and solid rocks. These were washed away by erosion, leaving the solidified basaltic lava that forms today's rock formations. Cappadocia was on the famous Silk Road. The people living there were often attacked by many different aggressors. Therefore, the residents have hollowed out the soft tuff rock to hide in. Entire underground cities were created, which can still be visited today.

GOREME

Goreme, ten kilometers from Nevsehir, is a tourist center. However, it is still a small Central Anatolian village.

A village often cited as a center of faith. In fact, Goreme Valley boasts the largest concentration of rock-cut chapels and monasteries in Cappadocia. From the 9th century onwards, around 30 churches were dug into the soft volcanic tuff, many of which have elaborate Byzantine frescoes. Recognizing the valley's cultural importance, the Turkish government restored the caves and created the Goreme Open Air Museum. In 1985, UNESCO declared the Goreme Valley a World Heritage Site.

AVANOS

Avanos is located on the Kizilirmak, Turkey's longest river. The small town with around 15,000 inhabitants has a past that goes back to the Hittite period.

The historical relics from the various eras that the city has experienced since then are correspondingly diverse. Persians, Romans, Seljuks and many other great peoples have left traces of their rule here. It is known above all for the pottery made by hand in the local traditional potteries and brickworks. In the numerous small potteries you can watch the craftsmen at work and buy beautiful souvenirs.
